Movie Review: Bangkok Traffic (Love) Story

Bangkok Traffic Love Story (BTS) is another rom-com from Thailand released in 2009. This movie was the highest grossing film of the year, earning a total of 140 million baht after 4 weeks in theaters.

Here we are introduced to Mei Li, a girl who just turned 30, struggling to find her one true love, is pressured by the fact that all her friends are already married while she is very much single. She meets Loong, an engineer who works at Skytrain BTS system. She instantly falls in love with him, she tries hard to make the first move hoping to get his attention, but things just don't go according to plan.

The first half of the movie is all hilarious and crazy. It's a full ride of her funny misadventures. Cris Horwang (Mei Li) skillfully delivered a perfect, exaggerated comical character. Likewise, the supporting characters were also good, they made the movie a lot funnier—her best friend Ped, who reminds me of Teacher Inn (Crazy Little Thing Called Love), her bad mouthed granny who speaks Chinese all the time, her TV drama obsessed mother and of course, the weird boss. I couldn't get over their dance routine in the office. Hahaha! It's funny and cute.

The second half is boring and flat, no development on the characters, the conflicts are too shallow. I think some scenes are familiar, Filipino movies usually have them—the heroine runs after the hero who is leaving to the States (some other part of the world), the cringy corny ending where they are in a public place, people hear their conversation, and everyone applauds them (because it's happily ever after).
Rating: 6/10. It has a good start but it becomes disappointing as we go through the end.
