I've been high since this morning because of Nice Guy. I couldn't focus on my work because my mind's preoccupied by the upcoming episodes. Actually, I'm quite lunatic today, crazy over these released spoiler photos and recaps. I'm still shocked and I keep on trying to interpret it differently. I am desperately hoping that EunMa OTP will be happy and be together soon. I fear that this might be the start of gloomy, frustrating and worse episodes. I don't want NG to end up like other Lee Kyung Hee's previous works. Her A Love to Kill and MISA started good but lost their spark in the middle and became worse as they reached the end.
Below are the spoilers I am talking about. The recaps of scenes from episode 9 and 10. I got it from Soompi NG forum.
Episode 9
Scene #1. Beach
Eun-Gi asks if every action, every word to her were calculated. Maru: "Probably."
Then she asks if rescuing her doll on the cliff was calculated too. MR: "Probably."
EG waits a beat then really lights into MR, growing more & more emotional and angrier as she speaks (she also switches to the informal--they almost always stick to the formal with each other--as if she's saying, "cut the crap"): "Are you stupid? That cliff... one wrong move and you were going to fall to your death, that's how steep it was. You were going to risk your life just to seduce a woman? Get yourself killed and end your life, Han Jae-Hee or no Han Jae-Hee? Say something that makes sense, Kang Maru! Why are you lying?! The Kang Maru I've watched all this time, the Kang Maru I've known all this time at least was not like you, not a man who pretends to be this evil guy he isn't. That's why I gave up everything and ran to you like a crazy woman just so I could have you, do you get that?!"
And then MR does something he's never done all this time with EG, as he brushes her hair away from her face--not just lie to her face but also play seductive: "Isn't that why you fell for me? It's because I pretended to risk my life that someone like you, a woman who's bad-tempered, haughty and doesn't trust people fell for me at once. Do you think there's anything I wouldn't have done if I thought I could get back Jae-Hee noona?"
And as the camera goes back and forth between the two, EG accepts what he's saying and walks away from him, dazed and reeling from shock.
MR doesn't move from where he stands, and his face's inscrutable. The only telltale sign is when he starts to blink repeatedly and clears his throat.
Scene #2. Chairman Seo's office at home
He's working at his desk talking to Joon-Ha on his mobile (speakerphone), and Joon-Ha asks him to re-consider his decision (to disinherit Jae-Hee etc.), when Jae-Hee enters the office. She has no idea Joon-Ha's on the phone, listening on the entire conversation, when she threatens the Chairman with the documents from the safe. Also lays out all the cards on the table, telling him she's done everything to protect him, even betray the only man she's ever loved, and she stood by him, even though she knew the only woman he's ever loved was Eun-Gi's mother. Jae-Hee's ultimatum is really upsetting him and he's in the throes of an attack, reaching for his medicine, but it falls away and Jae-Hee grabs it. She begs him not to disinherit Eun-Seok (wants him to divide equally btw EG and ES), swearing that she'll walk away from this house, empty-handed, if he spares their son, yelling at him "he's your son too!". That's when he keels over and she rushes to his side, screaming for him.
Scene #3. Eun-Gi's car
She's driving when she gets a message from Joon-Ha that says "The Chairman has passed away." Pulls over and we see her hunched over the wheel, nearly hyperventilating. There's some good distance btw her car and MR's car and they were both driving back to Seoul when she got that message. She resumes her journey, then suddenly makes a U-turn and heads back. They both enter the tunnel, the only cars in the tunnel, and it's when MR notices EG's car in the other lane that she veers into his and he realizes what she's doing. EG's car's accelerating more and more, and the preview ends on what we saw last week, MR with tears in his eyes and EG's headlight illuminating his face.
Episode 10
Scene #1. Maru's house
Maru's standing next to Eun-Gi's secretary, while EG's looking around the garden, touching some stuff (the mirror, the light bulb), when she turns back and says "I've been here before, haven't I? I'm going to remember everything, so don't say anything and wait for me." (Doesn't sound like the accident impaired her speech.) And she resumes what she's doing while her secretary fills in Maru on EG's condition. She says the accident and resulting brain damage left EG with not just memory loss, but also learning disabilities (she has trouble counting, can't read nor write very well, is easily disoriented, etc.) and personality change, so she/the secretary has kept her hidden from the public. Says that if the truth about EG's condition is found out, not only will she lose her place at Taesan (and right to inherit), but her life may even be threatened. Maru's taking it all in silently. (Looks like he hasn't seen EG for some time, and it's EG who's come looking for him, having remembered his place.)
Scene #2. Taesan conference room
Jae-Hee's leading the meeting, obvious she's the acting CEO and lawyer Ahn her right arm. She wants to put a stop to the projects EG had been leading before the accident, replacing them with her own projects. After the meeting, she asks Min-Young if they could convene the board to remove EG from the company altogether.
Scene #3. Maru's house
Looks like EG asked Maru if they used to be lovers, because the scene begins with Maru telling EG, very coldly, that it sounds like the accident messed with her head, because they're nothing more than two people who just happen to have taken pictures together, it had nothing to do with love or anything like that whatsoever, "we just knew each other, for a while, that's all." And tries to leave when she grabs him arm again and says (informally) "My heart knows it. My heart remembers you. (touches her heart) She remembers... you." And she smiles at him. Maru's harder to read than ever but he's not unaffected by what she's saying. But that doesn't stop him from rejecting her nor leaving very coldly.
Scene #4. Jae-Hee's house
She's going over Eun-Seok's diary that complains about missing his mother, who's too busy for him, and his sister Eun-Gi. When Eun-Seok (who just had his bath) talks about missing EG again, she says (though it's more like she's talking to herself at this point) that if EG comes back, she and ES will be in danger, that the car she's driving has no brake and she can't stop, even if it leads to self-destruction, not when Eun-Seok is at stake. And vows (silently) never to let EG come back.
Scene #5. Maru's house, night
Jae-Gil's drinking by himself, when MR comes home. Asks where he's been, "have you been swindling the weak and powerless again?" MR doesn't answer and instead asks for Choco. JG: "She left home. Packed her bags and left. She doesn't want your money, and she's not going to use any of your dirty money ever again." Says she cancelled all of the bank accounts and insurance policies MR had in her name and gave the money back to the man MR swindled from. MR: "Why didn't you stop her?" JG: "Stop her? Why would I stop her? I should applaud her instead. Can't even believe you and she share the same blood." MR: "Do you know what I did to save that money for her?" JG: "Of course we do! It's not enough you sell your body, now you're selling your soul. How could she use that money? Would you? Would you use that money in her shoes?"
My nutshell impression of Maru in episode 10? (Let's remember btw we don't know what happened in the tunnel in the end.) Pre-accident Maru used to be someone who cared and who showed he cared even when he didn't want to, and knew right from wrong. Whatever's happened in episode 9 must have pushed him over the edge because post-accident Maru doesn't care any more, he's in a really, REALLY dark place, and he's really, REALLY cold. Not a hint of warmth or conscience, it's like he's dead inside.

I just stumbled across your summary and wanted to say thanks since I haven't seen the latest episodes. I think MR is in at a mourning stage...loss of himself (when he ended with JH) and then the loss of the girl he might have fallen in love with but was denying his feelings for her...he's going through the motion of living not caring who he hurts because he's hurt. I think he is looking for someone to take care of his pain for once since he's always silently taking care of others around him... Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome. Actually, the summary is not mine,I only reposted it. I'm hoping they get back together and be happy together even it's short-lived. In the last part of episode 10, MR saves EG from JH's brother. So maybe from there, he'll start caring for and protecting EG again.
ReplyDeleteThanks...can't wait to see what happens next...watching with abated breath...
